In his first public remarks since rebels took hold of Tripoli, US President Barack Obama acknowledged the shift in power in the Libyan capital.
“The situation is still very fluid. There remains a degree of uncertainty and there are still regime elements that pose a threat. But this much is clear, the Gaddafi regime is coming to an end and the future of Libya is in the hands of its people.”, the US President said.
Speaking from Martha s vineyard where he is vacationing with his family, obama urged Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down.
Obama further said, “Although it is clear Gaddafi s rule is over. He still has the opportunity to reduce further bloodshed by explicitly relinquishing power to the people of Libya and calling for those forces who continue to fight to lay down their arms for the sake of Libya.”
The president also called on the opposition to conduct a peaceful transition — adding that the U.S. looks forward to working with a post-Gaddafi Libya.
“Now, the Libya you deserve is within your reach. Going forward, we will be in close coordination with the TNC to support that outcome and there will be huge challenges ahead, the extraordinary events in Libya remind us that fear can give way to hope and that the power of people striving can bring about a brighter day ” he said.
